A grieving mother leaves an industrial mill town behind, carrying an old pine chest of carpentry hand tools into an unforgiving mountain ridge. With winter closing in and temperatures dropping past zero, she begins framing twenty-eight wooden shelters along the frozen timberline, each chamber proportioned to the exact physical reach of a growing life cut short.Aided only by two taciturn local men-a weather-beaten timber patrolman and an aging sawmill operator with gravel in his joints-she battles splitting grain, dull saw teeth, frozen ropes, and treacherous rock shelves. Using salvaged white oak, dense ash, seasoned chestnut, and hand-driven iron bolts, each shelter is built to withstand high-altitude blizzards and shelter the wild birds that winter in the deep woods. A stark, grounded story of human resilience, physical labor, and the quiet weight of grief anchored in wood, iron, and stone.
