Articles of the Northern Star

Hull, 1856. When forged crew articles implicate Rosamund Kersey's respected marine office in improper wage deductions and a missing relief cargo, her business, employees, and reputation are placed at risk. Rosamund will protect her original records-but she will not surrender her independence or accept blame for papers altered beyond her custody. Restricted to an advisory role, Commander Julian Ashford must navigate Admiralty limitations, delayed messages, wary brokers, and evidence that points in more than one direction. With Petty Officer Martin Quill's practical assistance, Ashford and Rosamund trace a trail through seamen's lodging houses, telegraph offices, shipping records, and a vessel whose course was changed after departure. Their investigation reveals a careful scheme built from genuine forms, later additions, coercive wage claims, and reputation attacks. Yet proving the immediate fraud may not expose the hand behind it. As professional trust falters and public pressure mounts, Ashford and Rosamund must decide how much they can risk for truth-and for the affection growing between them. A richly atmospheric Victorian naval romance with maritime suspense, documentary intrigue, and a heroine whose expertise drives the investigation.
