Buddha Jumps Over the Arbor

Under the leaning cedar grape arbor of a coastal split-level home, an unspoken generational truce collapses over a simmering pot of broth. On the upper floor, an ambitious fusion chef stakes his restaurant's reputation on high-heat precision, thirty-day dry-aged beef, and rich artisan cheeses. On the ground floor, his retired father-in-law guards decades of domestic routine, quiet physical sacrifice, and an ancient imperial soup recipe built on dried sea cucumber, mountain herbs, and endless patience. When an argument over culinary authenticity spills across the backyard hedge, a neighborhood exhibition match is born with high financial stakes: the loser must cover thousands of dollars in overdue college savings for the children. As kitchen stoves roar on the lawn and pungent aromas battle through the cedar pickets, two stubborn patriarchs find themselves cornered by their own pride, an unforgiving set of rules, and a pair of observant grandchildren who see right through the adults' stubborn maneuvers.A grounded, dialogue-driven dramedy exploring the unseen labor of immigrant households, the fierce pride behind traditional cooking, and the unexpected flavors that emerge when family walls finally crack.
