An analysis of the international development of the researsh field points to two well-defined clusters: one consisting of scholars with a background in language studies and another with scholars of cognitive science and psychology with an interest in language acquisition and language loss. Moreover, the study shows the increasing institutionalization of the field over time through the foundation of professional associations and journals.
