Dead Mountain: The Last Night of the Dyatlov Expedition, Hour by Hour
Läs merLäs mindre
On 23 January 1959, ten students and graduates of the Ural Polytechnic Institute boarded train No. 45 out of Sverdlovsk, bound for Mount Otorten in the far Northern Urals. One of them, Yuri Yudin, turned back sick at an abandoned settlement on 28 January. The other nine skied on.On 1 February they dug a platform into the eastern slope of Kholat Syakhl, a mountain whose Mansi name is traditionally translated as Dead Mountain, and pitched their tent. That evening they wrote a joke newspaper about a world record for stove assembly. Twenty-five days later, searchers found the tent cut open from the inside, the boots still inside, and eight or nine sets of footprints walking down into the dark.Dead Mountain reconstructs the expedition from the record the hikers left behind: the group diary, their personal diaries, the last frames of film, the clothing on their bodies, the watches on their wrists, and the 1959 case files. Hour by hour it synchronises those sources until the record runs out, then tests every theory against the evidence: Mansi hunters, escaped prisoners, rocket tests, radiation, glowing spheres, a Yeti, and a slab of wind-packed snow a few metres across. The result is a verdict of plausibility, never certainty, and an exact accounting of the minutes no document can reach.
