Delphi Ancient Classics

A first century Roman poet of Etruscan origin, Persius wrote polished satires that reveal his interest in Stoicism and a strong criticism for what he considered to be the stylistic abuses of his poetic contemporaries. Like Juvenal who would write half a century later, Persius was the heir to the style of Latin verse satire developed by Lucilius and Horace, which were clearly aimed at a sophisticated and urban audience. He adopts the mask of an angry man, while his sharp criticism of the society in which he lives is combined with flashes of sardonic humor. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Latin texts.
