Emerging Challenges in Greek and Latin Linguistics

Ancient languages offer a unique and challenging scenario for linguists: no native speakers exist, linguistic production has ceased, and the data are limited in terms of both tokens and types. Scholars are thus compelled to explore new approaches, and integrate diverse perspectives.The volume covers a wide range of topics in Greek and Latin linguistics, spanning from internal grammatical aspects to contact phenomena, from language change to ancient grammarians' metalinguistic reflection and textual analysis. In view of the diversity of themes, texts and frameworks explored, the volume displays a rich sample of the various fields in which the linguist's work can benefit from an approach based on an integrated method intersecting linguistics and philology.The methodological relevance of integrating these different aspects in research on classical languages is the common thread connecting the studies included in this volume, which also aim at fostering dialogue, comparison, and exchange among linguists interested in both languages.
