The days were short, and the nights long: the snow had set in, and the river frozen solid, but the first ships came anyway. Their smoke clogged the air while Persephone worked long days, eating little, only to be back at work the next day. She watched those ships travel up the river to the Island of Death and did nothing, breaking the silence that was her home, not knowing what lay in wait.What lies inside that island's shores gives its name another meaning, only after is when Persephone tells her story.Notes: Centuries later, on board a giant squid-shaped spaceship swims through space. In a file at the back of the ship's library, an unnamed PhD student researches a prison in Earth's past for their dissertation. As they read through the file, this unnamed narrator is the first to witness Persephone's life in years.
