Immigrants in Britain during the Long Nineteenth Century

Läs mer

This collection of four volumes explores the history of migrants in Britain during the long nineteenth century, beginning with the French Revolution and ending with the aftermath of the First World War. The primary sources in these volumes cover Irish, Jewish, German, French, and Italian immigration into Britain, as well as minority groups that moved into Britain from beyond Europe during this time. The project makes use of a wide range of sources, and includes extracts from some of the published contemporary classic sources on nineteenth and early twentieth century British social history including Henry Mayhew, Charles Booth and George R. Sims; newspaper sources, both for the purpose of providing information but also to demonstrate the existence of racism within Britain; periodical publications; official publications which focused upon migrants in the nineteenth century, ranging from the 1836 Royal Commission on the Poorer Classes in Ireland through to the Report of the Committee Appointed to Consider Applications for Exemption from Compulsory Repatriation by Interned Enemy Aliens (1919); and, in order to give the perspective of migrants, the volume also provides extracts from autobiographies, memoirs and oral history.Accompanied by introductions and annotations written by the editor, this collection will be of great interest to students of British and World History.
