THE ANCESTRAL WOODS

Läs mer

The Ancestral Woods is a novel about memory, grief, and the covenant between the Vance family and a sentient forest. Elara Vance returns to Verity to bury her grandmother, Iris, the town's reclusive Keeper. She finds a community suffering progressive memory loss: labels on shelves, forgotten names, and a creeping dread. Her grandmother's will requires Elara to live on the estate six months or lose the woods to the town. The deed calls the woods "e;the memory"e; and warns that no Vance may forget.Elara revisits her childhood cottage and discovers hundreds of drawings by her mother, Linnet, each of a seven-lobed oak leaf. She learns Linnet entered the woods and emerged with total amnesia. At the manor, she finds Iris's journals, unsent letters, and an oil lamp that burns without fuel-kept lit for eighteen years to guide Elara home. Iris was the Keeper, bound to protect the woods and its living archive of memories. With Finn, the blind groundskeeper, Elara enters the forest and walks the Round, touching seven trees: Memory, Sorrow, Secrets, Truth, Joy, Mercy, and Forgetting. The woods are dying from a blight caused by Ysolde, the First Keeper, who refused to let her dead daughter Maren go, turning the forest into a tomb. Maren still exists as the woods' voice and loved Iris for fifty years.Silas Thorne, a charming folklorist, arrives researching the woods. He is desperate to cure his mother's dementia and secretly seeks Corwin's key, a sphere hidden beneath the church. He believes it will free the woods and restore memory. Elara, warned by Finn, confronts Silas at the winter solstice. He uses the key; the blight surges. Elara shatters the sphere by showing him the truth: the woods are not a resource but a living partner.Silas is redeemed through the hawthorn of Mercy, learning his mother's humming tune was a gift, not a plea to be fixed. At the yew of Forgetting, Elara discovers Linnet willingly traded her memories to buy the town time. Elara lets go of her worst memory and receives a tender one in return. The town begins leaving memories at the Edge Stones. Finally, Elara frees Maren, and the covenant is renewed jointly between Keeper and town. A year later, Elara is pregnant, and the woods remember hope. The Ancestral Woods is a ghost story without ghosts, where love is the haunting and memory is tended, not imprisoned.
