The Crystal Beads, Lalka's Journey

A powerful and heartwarming story of courage, identity, and faith during the Holocaust—told through the eyes of a child. The Crystal Beads: Lalka’s Journey is an award-winning historical picture book based on true events that took place in Nazi-occupied Poland. When a young Jewish girl named Lalka is sent away by her mother to live in a Catholic orphanage, she clings to two items: a delicate rosary and a small crystal-bead bracelet—symbols of the identities she must carry in a world of fear and persecution. As Lalka navigates the confusion and heartbreak of hiding who she truly is, her story becomes a tender, age-appropriate introduction to the Holocaust for children, families, and classrooms. Through exquisite illustrations and emotionally resonant text, this book invites young readers to explore important themes of sacrifice, resilience, compassion, and the power of faith.
