THE SERMON ATELIER, Volume 2 follows the work that begins after a preacher has interpreted the biblical text. It shows, step by step, how exegetical work is shaped into sermon points, application, a complete manuscript, actual proclamation, and post-sermon evaluation.Using Mark 10:17-31 as its central working text, the book moves from observation and exegesis to the message of each unit, generalization into principle, and the formation of sermon points. It then carries those points into concrete application, tests the scope and force of that application, assembles exegetical and pastoral material under each point, and develops the first full draft of the sermon. But the work does not end when the manuscript is finished. The completed sermon is placed beside the biblical text again and examined for structure, weight, and scope. The book asks whether the sermon has said more than the text says, failed to say what the text does say, or allowed one point to take over the work of another. Through a distinctive text-substitution test, it also asks a crucial question: Would this sermon remain essentially the same if another similar passage were substituted for the present text? If so, the sermon may not yet have received its shape from this particular passage.Throughout the book, Practical Reverse Checks bring previously used sermons back to the workbench. Applications that went beyond the text, introductions that revealed the answer too early, imagined details that became arguments, and theological connections that grew stronger than the textual evidence are examined and repaired. The goal is not merely to show polished results, but to reveal where judgment shifted, what had to be measured again, and why a revision was necessary. The final chapters reshape the completed manuscript for the pulpit, evaluate what actually happened in proclamation, and return the preacher once more to the Word he has preached.THE SERMON ATELIER, Volume 2 is not simply a book about writing sermons. It opens the workbench and shows how a sermon is built, revised, tested against the text, preached, and evaluated-from text to pulpit and back to the text again.
