Wreck Register at Whitby

Läs mer

In autumn 1856, a relief schooner vanishes from an authorized North Sea route, and a forged wreck notice sends insurers into retreat. Commander Julian Ashford is dispatched to assist an Admiralty inquiry, but investigative authority rests with Lieutenant Harcourt-and the evidence soon points toward Whitby's most capable salvage proprietor. Miss Beatrice Hallowell inherited her father's licensed wreck and salvage office, along with its boats, employees, and meticulously kept registers. When a recovered relief crate appears in her custody and a commercial circular hints at betrayal, Beatrice refuses both easy exoneration and demands for her original records. Working within the boundaries of law, evidence, and civilian authority, Beatrice and Ashford follow false notices, altered receipts, harbour accounts, and suspicious cargo seals. Their investigation reveals a calculated use of legitimate wreck-clearance procedures to redirect relief goods and manipulate insurance timing. Yet every discovery raises another question about who truly commands the network. As danger and reputational pressure mount, mutual respect becomes unmistakable affection. But duty, independence, and the uncertainties of naval service make promises impossible. In Whitby's windswept harbour, trust may be the most valuable evidence of all.
